Violence in a relationship often follows a cycle: growing tension, a violent incident, then a short “honeymoon” phase. But these calm periods don’t last—the cycle repeats. To stay safe, it’s vital to break it.
1. Create an Emergency Plan
An emergency plan can save your life. Prepare in advance:
Essentials: clothes, medications, toiletries.
Money: cash + a bank card in your name.
Documents: ID, legal papers, bank statements.
Contacts: hotlines, shelters, trusted friends or family.
Keep this bag in a safe place and tell someone you trust about it.
2. Secure Your Home
Change the locks and, if possible, install a security system.
Plan safe exits (back doors, windows).
Strengthen safety: outdoor lights, trimmed bushes, locked doors and windows.
Your safety comes first.
3. Build a Support Network
Don’t face this alone. Reach out to:
trusted people (family, friends, coworkers, neighbors),
support groups or organizations specializing in domestic violence.
A strong network is a true safety net.
4. Keep Evidence
If you decide to take legal action, collect:
a journal with detailed notes of incidents,
photos of injuries or damage,
threatening or abusive messages,
medical reports,
if legal where you live, audio/video recordings.
Store evidence in a safe place, outside your home if possible.

5. Use Legal and Support Resources
Call a confidential hotline (available 24/7).
Contact a victim support service for emotional and practical help.
If necessary, request a protection order or consult a lawyer specializing in domestic violence.
6. Regain Financial Independence
Open a personal bank account separate from your partner.
Look for stable employment to secure steady income.
Create a budget covering essentials (housing, food, bills).
Taking control of your finances is a key step toward lasting freedom and autonomy.
Leaving domestic violence is not easy, but it is possible. With a clear plan, supportive people, and the right resources, you can rebuild your life and regain control.
